Thousand Oaks, the second largest city in Ventura County, lies about an hour northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Native American Indians from the Chumash tribe inhabitated this area over 10,000 years ago. It is know that two major villages were established and several others in the surrounding area. Each village was ruled by a chief or several chieftains, who traveled between villages to discuss matters of common interest. A council of elders ruled over village life. Tribal artifacts are on display at the Satwiwa Native American Indian Cultura Center and the Chumash Indian Museum.

Fast forward to the early 1800s, the historical timeline for the city of Thousand Oaks includes Mexican rule until 1848, being part of the California Republic until 1850, then part of the U.S. when California gained statehood in 1850.

Fast forward again to 1950-1970 when the Conejo Valley experienced a population boom. Ranching and farming started to give way to growth of tech companies.

The city of Thousand Oaks was incorporated on October 7, 1964.
