Northridge is a neighborhood in the north central part of the San Fernando Valley, northwest of Los Angeles. The Northridge area can trace it’s history back to the early Tongva Indians and later to Spanish explorers. It was sold by the Mexican governor Pio Pico to Eulogio de Celis, whose heirs divided it for resale.
Originally named Zelzah by settlers in 1908, the community was renamed North Los Angeles in 1929 but the appellation caused confusion between North Hollywood and Los Angeles. In 1938, civic leader Carl S. Dentzel decided to rename the community to Northridge Village, which later was shortened to Northridge
Magnitude 6.7 Northridge Earthquake in Januray, 1994
Besides being home to California State University Northridge (CSUN) and the beautiful Japanese Gardens, Northridge is notable for being the site of the destructive magnitude 6.7 Northridge Earthquake which struck at 4:31 AM, on Monday, Jan. 17, 1994. This massive earthquake, which was caused by a rupture in an undocumented thrust fault, killed 60 people, injured more than 9,000 and caused over $20 billion in damage.
Cities have learned many lessons from this massive earthquake and have taken many steps to mitigate the impact of future earthquakes. “Southern California has about 10,000 earthquakes each year, though most are so small that they are never felt,” says Aram Sahakian, General Manager of the Los Angeles Emergency Management Department.

The Japanese Garden
Designed by Dr. Koichi Kawana, is a 6 1/2 acre garden oasis which features three gardens in one. There is a dry Zen meditation garden (karesansui) containing Tortoise Island, a three-Buddha arrangement of stones, and a wisteria arbor at the end of the Plover Path. Next is an expansive Chisen or “wet-strolling” garden with waterfalls, lakes and streams, greenery, and stone lanterns which were hand-carved by artisans in Japan. At the end of this path is the Shoin Building with an authentic 4 1/2 tatami-mat teahouse and adjacent tea garden.
The uniqueness of this garden is its authenticity while having it be compatible with the Valley climate and environment.
The design of the strolling garden enables the viewer to walk from one point to another and enjoy differing vistas from various points in the garden and to be enjoyed throughout all four seasons with the various combinations of flowers such as azaleas, cherry trees, magnolias, wisteria, raphiolepis indica, iris and lotus, along with the other garden features.
