Encino (Spanish for “oak”) is an affluent neighborhood in central and southern San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California.
In 1769, Padre Juan Crespi, a Franciscan missionary traveling with the Spanish Portolá expedition, was one of the first Europeans to see inland regions of California, Crespi named the valley “El Valle de Santa Catalina de Bolonia de Los Encinos” (The Valley of St. Catherine of Bologna of the Holm Oaks). All of Crespi’s name was subsequently dropped except “Encino”.
Rancho Los Encinos (Ranch of Holm Oaks) was laid out in 1845 when a large parcel of the former Mission San Fernando land was given to three Mission Indians by governor Pio Pico. Many ranchos were created after the secularization of the California missions, which began in 1834. Encino derives its name from the rancho.
One fun thing do is visit the Los Encinos State Historical Park where you will learn all about the history of Encino and surrounding communities in the San Fernando Valley. This rancho was the center of the Rancho El Encino, an area occupied by American Native Indians for thousands of years, and later conquered by the Spanish in the late 1700s.
This area was strategically located along the travel route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. This park houses exhibits which depict the various ranching and farming endeavors of the various Rancho Los Encinos owners over the years.
The history of this area is similar to the colonization of the entire San Fernando Valley.
